Eating your way through New York City: tested and approved restaurants

March 13, 2023

Are you looking for places to eat in New York? Here are the best restaurants that I have tried and approved during my stays!
Feel free to share your favorite places in the comments or your opinion on the addresses I mention. There are never enough restaurants to try!

Should you make reservations for restaurants in NYC?

Overall, we did not make reservations for restaurants, but rather let ourselves follow our day-to-day moods. We never had any problems finding a place to eat, even if sometimes we had to wait a few minutes to get in.

We personally had organized our program in advance because we had to book some activities beforehand. I made a Google map with all the points of interest and the places I wanted to try or that I knew. The only thing left to do was to have a look when we were hungry to know what was around us!

Best streefood restaurants in New York

  • Joe’s pizza (West Village – $): also known as the celebrities’ pizza (cuckoo Ben Affleck) specializing in thin slices and good prices. In my personal top 3 of the best pizza in NYC – and not expensive.
  • Shake shack (everywhere – $): a must! The best fast food burgers I’ve ever had in my life. I will never get tired of them!
  • Wendy’s (everywhere – $): Apparently a go-to for American fast food and yet big disappointment. I waited in line for a very long time for a not so good burger…

The best restaurants in New York for lunch and dinner

  • Maman (SoHo, Tribeca, NOMAD, Meatpacking, Greenpoint, Hudson – $$): Initially drawn in by the name which made me nostalgic about home – I ended up discovering a terrific brunch spot! I wasn’t disappointed at all! From the decor to the food, everything was just as pretty as it was yummy. A soft spot in my heart for the croque maman.
  • Juliana’s (Dumbo – $$): the best pizza in New York (don’t say you heard it from me). Thin, freshly made, handmade pizzas. A real delight! Beware, this restaurant is a victim of its success ( well deserved) so you may have to wait in line a few minutes before entering if you go there during “rush hour”.
  • Chelsea Market (Chelsea – $): a covered market where you can discover all kinds of world cuisine. Italy, Mexico, South Korea, Spain, Portugal… A complete world tour in just a couple of minutes.
  • Ellen’s stardust diner (Broadway – $$): a must stop in Times Square. The food is pretty good and the atmosphere is amazing thanks to the waiters and aspiring Broadway stars. Note that you are seated very close to the other customers. Avoid it if you don’t like promiscuity.

For a sweet break

  • Krispy Kreme (everywhere – $): We don’t need to present them anymore. The best donuts I’ve ever tasted, period.
  • Dunkin Donuts (everywhere – $): For your morning coffee or tea-time drink, this brand offers a wide range of drinks and pastries to enjoy without breaking the bank.
  • Sugar wood (SoHo – $$): NYC’s sexiest bakery avec des gaufres déjantées. Un goûter fun à expérimenter entre amies/

Have a drink in New York

  • Harriet’s Rooftop (Dumbo – $$$): enter the 1hotel and discover the breathtaking view on the skyline from the rooftop. Too bad that the cocktails are very expensive (about $25) but the view… is so stunning it can make you forget the expenses for a night.
  • 230 Fifth (Fifth Avenue – $$): very nice atmosphere, pretty good cocktails, yummy food and, obviously, an amazing view of New York.
